Ron celebrates 103 not out!
On May 24 Ron Ruffin celebrated his 103rd birthday with family and friends at 360Q where three shiny blue helium balloons floated above the table – 1 0 3.
Ron would normally hide his light under a bushel but that wasn’t to be this year as his family say all Ron’s birthdays are special.
Ron was born in Geelong and currently lives independently in Ocean Grove with the help of a couple of council services. His work was mainly farming – an orchardist, a chicken farmer and a fire prevention officer in Corio.
Ron and his wife Nancy (dec) had three children, twins Graeme who was apprenticed to Cayzer’s wooden boat builders in Queenscliff, Richard a physician in Adelaide, and Wendy O’Donoghue who operates Room 2 in Queenscliff.
He has 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Currently there are over 4400 centenarians listed in Australia so Ron belongs to a very select group.
When asked the standard question: What’s the secret of your longevity? Ron said he cheated death many times due to heart issues but ‘the real secret was very good surgeons, lots of luck and lots of love.’
